That is what makes driveways so easy to ignore. Black grime, algae and weeds arrive a season at a time, so most people never see the day their buff block paving turned green. They just notice, eventually, that the front of the house looks tired and cannot say why.

Then there is the practical side. The right tool for each part of the job

Open areas are done with a rotary surface cleaner, which is an enclosed head with jets spinning underneath it. It covers the ground at a steady distance and a steady speed, so the finish comes out even rather than striped. Edges, steps, corners and anywhere the head will not reach are done with the lance.

Pressure is matched to the surface rather than turned up to maximum. Concrete block paving takes a great deal; Indian sandstone, limestone, older flags and decking do not, and too much pressure marks them permanently. Where a surface is too soft for pressure we wash it at low pressure with a cleaning solution instead and let that do the work.

Afterwards, joints are resanded with kiln dried sand so the blocks lock together again and the weeds have nowhere to root. Sealing is available if you want it, though it is not always worth the money. We will tell you honestly which it is for your drive.
